The 2022 SD67 Caucuses are entirely virtual this year.
With COVID cases peaking in the coming weeks around the country and the continued threat of the Omicron variant to our friends and neighbors, the DFL has decided to make our usual in-person caucuses entirely virtual (that is, contactless) this year. This means that we will not be convening in person on Tuesday, February 1st at Harding High School.
What is a caucus?
It’s a word (with an interesting origin!) for what is essentially a meeting of like-minded people coming together to debate issues. In the case of the DFL precinct caucus, the goal will be to choose delegates. The elected delegates will endorse a candidate at future conventions that they feel best represents the values they hold and that they believe the DFL should hold.
Who comes to a caucus?
Anybody who sincerely agrees in general with the values and principles of the DFL. You can find a document that describes those principles and beliefs here. (PDF document)
However, for this caucus, you must live in Senate District 67. Not sure if you live there? Use this handy map published by the office of the Minnesota Secretary of State. Alternatively, an interactive map is available here. Another option is to type your address into the Legislature site here. If you fall into Senate District 67, you’re eligible to attend the caucus!
Serving as a delegate
This form is for interested participants to serve as declared or undeclared delegates for the upcoming Senate District, County Convention, County Wide, State, and Congressional delegate conventions. Also on this form is the ability for people to volunteer for convention committees and if people want to serve as election judges. Delegates attend an upcoming convention to endorse a candidate that they feel best represents their ideals for the DFL.
Putting forth a resolution
Do you think the DFL should have a different, new, or updated position on something? Is there an important state or local issue that you believe deserves attention? You may wish to ask the DFL to consider a resolution. If your resolution is adopted, it will become part of the State DFL Action Agenda (PDF document), which is a set of recommended public policy positions which the party supports and will promote during the next two years.
Instead, we want you to participate virtually on these two important items.
How can I sign up to participate?
First, an important note on terminology and process, because it can be confusing.
“Non-attendee” means you are signing up to participate virtually, instead of in-person. Everyone at the caucus will be a “non-attendee”. Because there is no in-person caucus, attendees will not be able to vote on delegates or resolutions. Delegates will be chosen by lot (randomly - see the DFL rules for this - PDF document). Normally, you would be able to vote, but the virtual nature of the event prevents that.
Resolutions submitted will go to committees to check for redundancies, then elected delegates will vote on all of the finalized resolutions at a later date. There is no requirement that you attend the caucus to submit a resolution - you only need to send in the form in one of the below three ways.
There are three ways to submit documents for the two items. You can mix and match.
Via a Google form
A typed signature and/or email is required and will be considered your official signature on the Google form. You do NOT need to have a Gmail account to fill out either of these forms.
